House Republicans vote to defund Congress
“This move helps out average, everyday Americans like you and me,” Rep. Michele Bachmann said. “Our founding fathers had no intention of Congress when they founded this country in Concord.” Bewildered Society Sometimes satire doesn’t seem like satire at first glance… I love it.

“What this bill says is it reiterates again the deadline, and that the Senate should act before the deadline, and that’s what the American people are expecting,” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Wednesday morning at a news conference with other House Republican leaders. “The bill then says if the Senate does not act, then H.R. 1 [the House-passed bill that cuts $61 billion] will...

How Gays Split a Check at a Restaurant →
danielextra: Too funny, especially since it has totally happened before. HOWEVER, let’s not come to believe that all gays are well-to-do homosexualists who could pay the whole bill for four boozy queens, but this exchange by Choire Sicha pretty much sums it up. Gay: “Give me that check, it is my turn!” Other Gay: “That is crazy talk, you paid three weeks ago at [name of other equally...

How To Split A Check At A Restaurant →
Now, the observant among you have read this, processed it and realized that in a group-dining scenario, one is effectively incentivized to order lavishly and imbibe irresponsibly, because not everyone else will, and thus what you end up paying will be disproportionate to what you actually owe, meaning that you make out like a bandit while your schmuck pals who exercise restraint in the name of...

Target Sues to Keep Activist Group from Canvassing... →
It is my understanding that Target doesn’t allow any solicitation at its stores by third-party groups. And despite being a “public space”, the store is private property and they can make decisions accordingly. If there is inconsistent enforcement of the policy, that should be cleared up. But it isn’t a black-and-white free speech argument.

Steve Inskeep: Liberal Bias at NPR? - WSJ.com →
NPR’s audience keeps expanding because Americans want more than toxic political attacks. They want news. Think again of my colleagues in Libya, going forward to bear witness amid exploding shells. Is that liberal or conservative? Maybe it’s neither. It’s an honest and honorable effort to keep Americans informed.

Barcelona, Manchester United: Is there enough... →
The old joke about soccer and American sports is that mild, single-payer Europe somehow gave birth to ruthlessly capitalist sports leagues, while laissez-faire America coughed up socialist ones. In light of the systemic inequalities facing soccer clubs, it might be more apt to say that European leagues are feudal aristocracies—a free-for-all for the lords, not so free for the peasants.

How to Beat the Salad Bar - NYTimes.com →
Of course salad bars provide for a certain measure of convenience, but the ingredients I crosschecked were, on average, 70 percent more expensive at the salad bar than on the shelves. Cucumber, for instance, was just $1.49 per pound in the produce aisle. Other ingredients were more reasonably priced — and a few were actually cheaper at the salad-bar rate than anywhere else in the store,...
